Finding God in the Ordinary Moments

May 2026 · Faith & Everyday Life

There’s a moment that happens to most of us somewhere between the alarm clock and the first cup of coffee. The world rushes in — emails, school runs, deadlines, news headlines — and the quiet we felt on Sunday morning seems a long way away.

But what if faith was never meant to live only in sanctuaries and Sunday services? What if God has always been most interested in meeting us right there — in the ordinary, unremarkable, wonderfully messy middle of our days?

The Sacred in the Small

The disciples didn’t encounter Jesus only in the temple. He met them while they were fishing. While they were on the road. While they were sharing a meal. Again and again, the Gospels show us a God who steps right into the middle of ordinary life and says: I am here.

That same invitation is open to us today. The morning commute, the school pickup, the difficult conversation with a colleague, the quiet moment when the house finally goes still — these are not gaps between the “real” moments of faith. They are the moments of faith.

Small Practices, Big Transformation

Living with an awareness of God’s presence doesn’t require a complete overhaul of your schedule. It begins with small, intentional habits:

A morning breath prayer. Before your feet hit the floor, take one deep breath and offer the day back to God. Even ten seconds of surrender can reorient everything that follows.

Gratitude at mealtimes. Not just a ritual, but a genuine pause — what has been good today? Where did you notice kindness, beauty, or unexpected grace?

Evening reflection. At the end of the day, ask: Where did I sense God with me today? Where did I miss it? This simple practice, known in the Christian tradition as the Examen, slowly trains us to see what was always there.

Bringing faith to conversation. You don’t need to preach to bring your faith into your relationships. Simply asking someone “How are you, really?” — and meaning it — is a profoundly Christlike act.

When Ordinary Feels Hard

We want to be honest: sometimes ordinary life doesn’t feel like a blessing. It feels like exhaustion. Like monotony. Like grief carried quietly so no one else has to see it.

The good news — the actual good news — is that faith doesn’t require us to pretend otherwise. The Psalms are full of people who brought their weariness, their frustration, and their questions straight to God. And they were heard.

If today feels heavy, you are not disqualified from encountering God. If anything, you are standing in exactly the kind of place where He tends to show up.

You Don’t Walk It Alone

One of the greatest gifts of being part of a church community is that we don’t have to figure out faith-in-daily-life on our own. We learn from one another — from the parent who has found ways to pray with young children, from the person who has navigated great loss and found God faithful, from the young person seeing the world with fresh eyes.

If you’re looking to go deeper, consider joining one of our small groups this season. There’s something powerful about sitting with others and asking together: What does it look like to follow Jesus this week, in real life?

Faith isn’t a compartment of life. It’s the light we carry through all of it.

We’d love to hear from you — where have you noticed God showing up in the ordinary moments lately? Share in the comments below, or speak to one of our team after a Sunday service.

With hope and gratitude, The Pastoral Team
